Have you noticed our Mya Wĕl in red, white, black, and yellow, and wondered what the significance of these particular colors are? You’ve come to the right place!
Many First People’s cultures have a medicine wheel, which represents seven common teachings. Although not all cultures make these representations with these four colors specifically, this is the most common combination.
Each color represents a different aspect of the 7 teachings.
These teachings vary by tribal customs and by the elders relating their own heritage and stories in the slight variations of their own lineage and traditions. However, there are a lot of common themes that can be taught and discussed in lessons that are very relevant to modern life. These can be proudly taught as evidence of the high-level knowledge in things cosmic, related to seasonal changes, timekeeping, use, and respect for animals, plants, and the elements.
There is no right or wrong way to use the medicine wheel as a teaching tool. It is both a universal symbol and a personal mnemonic tool for various cultures and individual stories. Inviting elders to relate their associated learnings about the medicine wheel is an important way of preserving and passing on culturally important knowledge.
Our Mya Wĕl is most commonly sold in this color combination. It becomes a teaching tool, to reconnect the younger generations to their heritage and instruct others about the First Nation cultures. It becomes a conversational circle, where learning and reconnecting with the culture is made easy!
